QR code not scanning? Seven checks to find the problem
A QR code that will not scan is not always a camera problem. The clear margin, print size, color contrast, or destination link may be the cause. Use this checklist to separate a scanning issue from a broken destination.
Create a new QR codeCheck whether the code or the link is failing
- 1
Open the destination directly
Open the URL contained in the QR code in a browser. If the page does not work, the issue is the destination, not the code.
- 2
Scan the on-screen code with another phone
Use a second device instead of trying to scan a QR code displayed on the same phone.
- 3
Test a printed copy at its actual size
If it scans on screen but not in print, check the print size, blur, glare, or cropped edges.
Improve the conditions for scanning
- Increase contrast: use dark modules on a light background. Avoid similar tones and inverted colors.
- Keep a clear margin: do not crop the quiet zone or cover it with text or a frame. Leave at least four modules of clear space around the code.
- Print it large enough: increase the code size as the scanning distance grows. There is no single size for every use, so test it from the real distance.
- Check glare and the surface: glossy lamination, curved surfaces, and low light can make it harder for a camera to focus.
- Reduce the logo or decoration: remove or shrink a logo that covers important parts of the pattern, then test with different phones.
- Simplify long content: more encoded data can make the pattern denser. If the QR contains a web address, choose a short, durable destination where possible.
Test the replacement code the right way
After changing the color or size, do not rely only on an on-screen preview. Download the PNG or SVG, display or print it at its final size, then scan it with different camera apps from the distance where people will use it.
A static QR code stores its destination in the pattern. You cannot change that destination after printing; create a new code and update the material if the target changes. Use a test copy first.
LentoCircle creates the QR code on your device. If you add a logo, keep the clear margin and test the final output before sharing it.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my QR code work on screen but not in print?
The print may be too small, blurry, cropped, or reflecting light. Test the final size at the real distance with another phone.
Can the color of a QR code affect scanning?
Yes. Keep clear contrast between the code and the background. A light code on a dark background can be harder for some cameras to read.
Can I change the destination of a printed QR code?
A static QR code stores its address in the pattern and cannot be edited after printing. Create a new code and replace the printed material if the destination changes.
Try it now
If a camera cannot read your QR code, check contrast, clear margins, size, print quality, and the destination link.
